The Rehearsal by aamora member Fred Shively (Part one)

Late in 2012 I was fortunate to be invited to photograph the Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchester as they rehearsed Sibelius’s 7th at the Gulbenkian Musica in Lisbon. These are some of the finest young musicians in the world. Because it was a rehearsal, I was able to get in quite close, not always possible in full performances.

  1. Great to have you back on aamora Fred, what an intimate gathering you have brought for us to view; like Aaron, this brings me back to the intensity of preparation and adding your small piece to the whole; me and my flute thank you 🙂

  2. Some of the finest times of my life were as a member of a youth orchestra, and this brings it all back beautifully. I was second clarinet in the Winnipeg Youth Symphony. There is nothing quite like being in the middle of all that amazing sound and all those intense musicians.

    1. Glad to provide some pleasurable nostalgia, Aaron. Cannot describe what a pleasure it was to hear/see these immensely talented young musicians at work. Doubly pleasurable because Sibelius is among my favourite composers.
