Ybor City is one of only three National Historic Landmark Districts in Florida. Cobblestone streets and very large, old cigar factory buildings make up this historic and legendary town. Founded in 1886 by Vicente Martinez Ybor, Ybor City became “the cigar capital of the world” by 1900.
The factories were worked by mostly Cuban cigar makers, and to a lesser degree by Italians and Spaniards. By the early 1950’s the cigar factories were gone.
Ybor was revitalized in the late 1990’s and now attracts large numbers of visitors due to the wide variety of shops, restaurants, clubs, and galleries; and of course having a hand-rolled cigar is a must while visiting.
Dawn Duffield, a painter, designer and photographer from Tampa, Florida, is the newest member of aamora. She tells us: “What I am most interested in is light and human nature. My work mostly comes from my subconscious in an emotional language that people seem to understand.” — You can enjoy more of Dawn’s photography at projectdawn.net.
This is special once again as is all of your work, Bravo my friend!
Hi Dawn, I visited Ybor City a few years ago, and it is a must for anyone who wants to experience all of Florida. It is so good to see some of your excellent work on Aamora.
i love the spontaneity of the images. the sense of a candid, informal viewpoint is strongly suggested in the way the color blends with the idea. ive discovered that color is sometimes more than just color, that sometimes it implies an intimacy between the photographer and the object being photographed such that it tells its own story. your photos impress me that way.
I had an aunt, Adelita, cuban, who went into exile and was employed at Ybor City. At least this is what my relatives tell me. I have liked to know something of this place. Thanks!
A very informative and interesting story. The images are brilliant, I especially like the first pic with the pinky tones. Great work as always!!
interesting place you’ve introduced to us. I’m especially drawn to the third image… beautiful.

Haha Mario 🙂
Composing shots for some, is similar to movement because we do not think about it; it is simply what we do.
The subconscious controls our walking, our driving and for some of us, our art.
Thank you all for the kind words, they are much appreciated!!!
I felt like I was peeking in.
Excellent!
Thankyou Dawn for this fascinating and beautifully photographed look at Ybor City!
Those look like some excellent parejo and perfecto figurados. Aamora aroma par excellence. Your photo essay is a delight for the senses.
